Allegations that the Senate sets its own salaries and allowances have been dismissed, with officials clarifying that these are determined externally.
The allegations suggesting that the Nigerian Senate granted itself salaries and allowances or obtained unique financial packages from the Presidency have been refuted by the Senate.
Fresh controversies were sparked in the upper legislative chamber following a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to a statement released by Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate Spokesman in Abuja on Sunday, it was stated that there is a disclaimer and clarification made regarding financial patronage from the presidency towards the 10th senate.
Furthermore, the Senate Spokesperson explained that constituency projects – a topic frequently discussed in public forums – are solely proposed and recommended by Senators through standard practices observed globally in democratic nations.

According to him, the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission has always strictly followed constitutional provisions while allocating salaries and allowances to Senators, which is a well-known fact.
The challenge was made to any Nigerian who possessed conflicting evidence, as the assertion that Senators set their own remunerations was deemed false and unwarranted.
According to the Senate, contracts for constituency projects are awarded by the Executive branch of government and its different Ministries and agencies. The amount of funds allocated for such projects differs based on the number of constituencies in each state with an aim to ensure that all regions in Nigeria derive benefits from federal resources.
As the nation approaches what a few characterize as a “period of political grandstanding,” Adaramodu guaranteed citizens that the 10th Assembly continues to be an accountable and compassionate assembly.
The organization reiterated its dedication to supporting Nigeria’s economy and development, asserting that it adheres strictly to constitutional allocations without seeking extra benefits from any other government division.
