The Senate and the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) are pushing for the inclusion of domestic workers in the minimum wage scheme, aiming to enhance their rights and improve working conditions.

In Nigeria, the Senate and the National Council for Women Society (NCWS) are urging to incorporate domestic workers in the planned 70,000 naira National Minimum Wage Scheme.

During a public hearing held by the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity to discuss a bill focused on registering and domesticating employers and domestic workers in Nigeria, this call was initiated.

During a recent discussion, Senator Osita Izunaso from Imo West and Geraldeen Etuk, the Acting National President of NCWS emphasized that it is crucial to incorporate domestic workers like housemaids and servants in the upcoming minimum wage legislation.

They maintained that such employees should receive an equal level of remuneration as their public sector counterparts at the lower rungs. This measure will facilitate equitable compensation practices within all job categories.

“As a committee member, Senator Izunaso expressed his conviction that the proposed N70,000 National Minimum Wage Law should cover domestic workers including housemaids and servants.”

The Committee’s Chairman, Senator Diket Plang, stated that a new agency would be set up to enforce the proposed legislation and managed by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

The objective of this measure is to secure the successful implementation of minimum wage regulations for domestic employees, ensuring their incorporation into a more comprehensive economic security framework.
