Secretariat burning: We have the situation under control – Kano Police
The Gwale Local Government Secretariat was set on fire by arsonists, resulting in property loss. The Kano State Police Command claims to have brought peace and order back.
In a statement sent to reporters in Kano on Wednesday, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s public relations officer, revealed this.
The Community Development, Works, and Audit Departments are among the three offices of the Local Government Council Headquarters that were set on fire earlier this morning between 0500-0630 hours. The source of the incident is currently being investigated.
“To prevent any offenders from taking advantage of the situation, the Police Command successfully arranged for sufficient security for the Chairman and the Local Government Council Headquarters this morning.
Furthermore, since early in the morning, additional security personnel, such as DSS and NSCDC, have been there. As combined security operatives continue to provide the necessary protection, the area is currently peaceful.
Regretfully, at approximately 11:35 a.m., a group of anonymous trespassers forcibly entered the Secretariat Complex, causing chaos and throwing stones at everyone within. As a result, the police scattered the attackers with tear gas.
As the examination into the close and distant causes of the incidents is underway, the situation is generally under acceptable control, according to the leadership.
“Remain calm and be rest assured that the Police is on top of the situation and is fully prepared to deal with any person found constituting threat to national security,” the statement urged state citizens.
The State House of Assembly suspended Alhaji Ishaq Khalid Diso, the chairman of the council, and the command stated that the suspension period had ended on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, and that a court order was still in effect requiring the chairman to resume his duties.
Diso has stated that the Council will look into the circumstances surrounding the Secretariat fire.
Speaking to reporters in Kano on Wednesday, Diso declared that the court had restored his reinstatement and promised to start working again “any moment from now.”
