Six days before his term as president comes to an end, President Muhammadu Buhari dedicated the Second Niger Bridge in the South-East on Tuesday.

The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing was tasked with finishing seven legacy projects around the nation, according to the Special Advisor to the President, Femi Adesina, who made the announcement.

In 2005, the idea for the Second Niger Bridge was developed. A Public Private Partnership (PPP) effort to start the project was made in 2014, however it was unsuccessful. With funding from the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF), development got underway in 2016.

Both the Ikom Bridge in Cross River State and the Loko-Oweto Bridge, which spans the River Benue and connects Benue to Nasarawa State, were both put into service. The road project includes three new Federal Secretariats as well as the completed portion of the more than 200-kilometer Kano-Kaduna Dual Carriage Expressway.

“The first of the Federal Secretariats in Awka is set on 5.106 Hectares of land and is located at Executive Business District Layout, Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. The project was first granted on December 9, 2011, but it wasn’t really finished until July 14, 2022, when the Ministry of Works and Housing took responsibility.

The Secretariat contains 498 offices overall, along with a conference room, four committee rooms, an exhibition space, a banking space, a post office, and a dignified reception area. The Secretariat also contains other necessary amenities such a staff cafeteria, fire hydrants, well-designed parking spots, and drainage.

The second Federal Secretariat is situated in Gusau, Zamfara State, near Unguwan Dan Lawan, off Sokoto By-Pass Road. The project, which is located on 7.5 Hectares of land and was likewise granted on November 9, was essentially finished by November 30 and turned over to the Ministry.

Some authorities referred to the Second Niger Bridge as the “Muhammadu Buhari Bridge” when it opened to much acclaim.

The Second Niger Bridge will officially be known as the Buhari Second Niger Bridge, Bashir Ahmad, Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications, said in a tweet on Tuesday. President Muhammadu Buhari today formally commissions the Muhammadu Buhari Bridge.

The five governors of the eastern zone, according to Tolu Ogunlesi, Special Assistant to the President on Digital/New Media, decided to rename the bridge.

The South-East Governors agreed that the Second Niger Bridge should be called the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge after talks.
