Music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been arrested in New York after facing a federal indictment. The details of the charges remain undisclosed as the investigation unfolds.

Late on Monday, a federal grand jury indicted Sean “Diddy” Combs – the hip-hop powerhouse who has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault. He was subsequently arrested in New York City.

While the details of the charges were not immediately disclosed by prosecutors due to a sealed indictment, Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, affirmed Combs’ detainment under federal agents’ custody through an official statement.

“In the morning, we anticipate initiating the unsealing of the indictment and will provide further information at that point,” stated Williams.

According to an anonymous source who was not authorized to speak publicly, Combs’ arrest took place in a Manhattan hotel lobby and was confirmed by The Associated Press.

According to his attorney Marc Agnifilo, Combs relocated to New York last week in expectation of the charges and has been cooperating with the investigation.

Agnifilo expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for opting to unfairly prosecute Mr. Combs, whom he describes as a renowned music figure and devoted family man.

“In spite of his imperfections, he is not a criminal,” stated Agnifilo. He further requested to wait for all the facts before passing any judgment. According to him, these are actions of an innocent person with nothing shady going on and that the accused individual looks forward to exonerating himself in court.”

It comes as no surprise that one of the most well-known figures and influential producers in hip-hop history is facing significant criminal charges.

On March 25, agents from Homeland Security Investigations carried out a coordinated search of Combs’ residences in Los Angeles and Miami. This revealed that federal authorities were investigating the 58-year-old celebrity figure.

Aaron Dyer, his attorney, described the raids as an excessive employment of military-grade force and stated that the claims were baseless one day later.

In the 1990s, Combs – formerly recognized as Puff Daddy – played a central role in the hip-hop conflicts between East and West Coast. He served as both partner and producer for Notorious B.I.G., who was fatally shot in 1997. Despite enduring that tumultuous period, time has turned his once rough exterior into that of an affable party host frequented by Hollywood elites or those summering on Long Island’s Hamptons. As a fashion-forward businessman with children to spoil (some of whom recently lost their mother), he now prioritizes being a devoted father above all else.

However, a contrasting depiction arose in November as his ex-student and lover, R&B vocalist Cassie filed the initial lawsuit against him for sexual misconduct. The allegations were compounded by tales of numerous sex workers present amidst drug-induced scenarios where some engaged parties had been pressured or persuaded into intercourse.

In November, Cassie filed a lawsuit claiming she had been subjected to abuse for many years, including physical assaults and sexual assault. The suit further accused Combs of involvement in sex trafficking by compelling her to perform non-consensual sexual acts across several regions and facilitating her transport with the intention of inducing coerced or fraudulent participation in forced sex.

It was also stated that he coerced Cassie into aiding him in the exploitation of male sex workers whom Combs would subject to sexual acts while recording, and made her participate as well.

Although the suit was resolved the next day, its impact continued to resonate for an extended period. Combs’ remaining allies, supporters and those who had yet to pass judgment were lost upon CNN broadcasting a leaked video in May depicting him punching Cassie, kicking her and throwing her on the floor of a hotel corridor.

Combs finally admitted to his wrongdoing the following day by posting a social media video apologizing for his actions, which was the first genuine acknowledgement since several allegations were made against him. He stated that he found it disgusting when committing those acts and felt disgusted even now. After Cassie’s litigation, multiple others filed similar lawsuits in subsequent months.

During the month of February, a legal case was initiated by a music producer who claimed that Combs had compelled him to engage in solicitation activities with prostitutes and even exerted pressure on him to have sexual relations with them.

A woman accused Combs of raping her 20 years ago when she was only 17.

April Lampros, a woman who initiated legal proceedings, revealed that she encountered Combs as a college student in 1994. Subsequently, an array of frightful sexual incidents followed with not only Combs but also his associates which continued for several years.

Combs and his legal representatives refuted almost all the claims made in the lawsuits.

Although officials did not explicitly state that the civil lawsuits triggered the commencement of the criminal inquiry, Dyer indicated during execution of warrants that it stemmed from groundless allegations posed in those legal actions.

Unless they come forward publicly like Cassie and Lampros, individuals who claim to have been sexually abused are typically not identified by the AP.

Combs, who established Bad Boy Records, has earned a reputation as one of the most impactful executives and hip-hop producers in the last thirty years. Collaborating with notable talents such as Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lil Kim, Faith Evans and 112 among others – including The Notorious B.I.G. – cemented his legacy even further within the industry.

When the allegations emerged, Combs’ ventures in areas other than music – such as his profitable private label spirits, media company and Sean John Fashion line- suffered significant setbacks.

The leaked video of the beating had severe repercussions. Howard University terminated its association with him, and he relinquished his key to New York City upon the mayor’s request, which amplified the consequences drastically.

Having been in the center of one of the most prominent hip-hop industry trials during its time, Combs has encountered multiple arrests previously.

The origins of that trial can be traced back to a shooting incident in 1999 at a nightclub located in Manhattan, which resulted in injuries sustained by three individuals. At the time when gunshots were unleashed, Jennifer Lopez – his former girlfriend who was an actor and singer too – happened to be present on the premises.

Although Combs was initially accused of bringing an unlawful firearm into the establishment and attempting to bribe his chauffeur to take responsibility for it, he eventually cleared himself. His former protégé, known as Shyne back then, was found guilty of assault and other violations in connection with the event and subsequently spent around eight years behind bars. He currently goes by Moses Barrow’s name is a representative in his birthplace Belize’s House of Representatives.

In 1999, Combs was arrested in New York for assaulting a record executive. He later pleaded guilty to harassment – considered a violation – and received an anger management class as his sentence.
