The Eastern Senatorial District of Kogi State was the scene of attacks against SDP supporters, and the Social Democratic Party, or SDP, has requested that security forces look into these incidents as soon as possible.

The call was made in a statement made accessible to DAILY POST on Thursday morning by Isaiah Ijele, Director, New Media, Muri/Sam Campaign Council.

In response to a popular social media video depicting vicious assaults on supporters ostensibly loyal to the SDP, Ijele noted that such heinous acts of violence, which have frequently marred the political landscape of Kogi State in the past, pose a grave threat to the freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.

According to Ijele, the police and other authorities must take all necessary precautions to stop acts of political violence and refrain from making provocative remarks that could inspire similar attacks or discourage people from endorsing political parties of their choosing.

Ijele provided additional details on the claimed recent attack on their supporters when he stated that “this attack was carried out twice in Ajiolo Ojaji in Dekina Local Government where a serving Senator from Kogi East hails from in the last 48 hours.”

We don’t want another incident like the one in Ochadamu, when a woman was burned alive and labelled a “retaliatory attack,” since no life is worth a politician’s ambition. At Ugwolawo in the Ofu Local Government, the same scenario occurred last night.

He also asserts that security officials need to act quickly to conduct a full, unbiased, and independent investigation into those assaults in order to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Ijele continued by saying that security organisations must also adhere to and uphold the rights to free speech, association, and peaceful assembly before, during, and after the impending election.
