The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has claimed that the Nigerian government is planning to persecute opposition figures in the country.
In a statement from its National Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP alleged that the government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) has finalized plans to bring criminal charges against former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
It has been reported that El-Rufai switched allegiance from the ruling APC to the SDP several days ago.
The statement also claimed that the ruling party planned to prevent El-Rufai from leaving Nigeria, suggesting this was meant to intimidate the opposition and deter further defections.
The statement includes the following part:
The SDP has received credible information indicating that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is worried about our party’s growing momentum.
In response, the APC has utilized its governmental influence to create false criminal charges against our members.
Our sources have disclosed that the persecution is set to begin with one of our notable leaders, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
The government is preparing to file several charges against him in both Abuja and Kaduna soon.
In anticipation of this, we have also discovered that the federal government has directed its agencies to prevent Mallam Nasir El-Rufai from departing the country.
