Discover why Fayose backs governors appointing local government bosses post S’Court verdict. Find out the implications and reactions.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose emphasized the crucial role of a serving governor in the appointment of local government chairmen, stating that the relationship between the state and local government levels is akin to that of a mother and her child.

He highlighted the necessity of the governor’s support in the selection process, asserting that it is a fundamental aspect of local governance.

Fayose’s comments came in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments and prohibiting governors from arbitrarily dissolving elected councils.

While he acknowledged the significance of the court’s decision, he questioned the practical implications of the judgment and expressed skepticism about its potential impact on the current system of governance.

Additionally, the former governor criticized suggestions for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to oversee local government elections instead of state electoral bodies, labeling such proposals as illegitimate.

He argued that the involvement of federal institutions in state-level electoral processes would constitute a breach of legal norms and questioned the feasibility of such a transition.
