According to former Senate President Bukola Saraki, the removal of Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is connected to the 2023 election.
The former governor of Kwara told security groups that they shouldn’t let themselves be used to rig the election for president.
Emefiele was accused by the Department of State Services (DSS) of supporting terrorism and committing economic crimes. This hurts the reputation of the top bank and makes people worry about more currency devaluation.
As someone who was also accused of something “for political reasons,” Saraki said in a statement on Wednesday that he saw some dark clouds around the DSS court case.
According to the politician, the case was started just over two months before the general elections, after the CBN toughened its rules for the cashless system and changed the value of the naira.
“I believe that individuals determined to sabotage the 2023 elections are engaging in a plot like the one that led me to be falsely implicated in the Offa robbery by political opportunists.
Saraki pointed out that the DSS lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja has been called pointless and not backed up by evidence.
“My stance is not to support Emefiele but to support democracy, which the conspirators are aiming to destroy.”
Even though I think the DSS is a very good security service, it was hard for me to figure out what led to the charges, the author said.
Saraki asked why the DSS hadn’t given clear evidence that would have helped the court come to a decision, leaving room for doubt and speculation.
According to him, the case is being viewed as a component of “a big conspiracy by those who seek to undermine and destroy the upcoming general election since their calculations on vote buying, rigging, and excessive use of money are falling apart.”
The statement said, “The new CBN regulation on a cashless regime is sure to annoy partisan scammers, smart politicians, and unpatriotic elements.”
According to Saraki, the same actors used the National Assembly as a tool to meddle with the electoral process by obstructing the transmission of electronic results, the Biometric Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), and new regulations on currency exchange and cash withdrawal.
Security services were instructed by the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to keep their distance from “anarchists and anti-democratic elements posing as Democrats or political actors.”
