In order to find those responsible for the Akere fire disaster, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police in Lagos, to undertake a thorough investigation.

At the Akere Auto Spare Part Market in Olodi Apapa, Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, Sanwo-Olu paid a visit on Wednesday to the scene of the midnight fire that damaged products and properties worth millions of naira.

In a meeting with the fire victims, the governor expressed his condolences and promised to assist the traders in making up for their losses.

One security guard was killed, and the market was set on fire, purportedly as a result of random shooting by some unidentified individuals.

Sanwo-Olu slammed the inflammatory act, calling it “unfortunate,” and ordered the police commissioner to make sure a thorough investigation was conducted to identify the culprits.

Also, he expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and pledged support for the funeral.

“I’m sorry for the loss of the cab driver’s family,” the governor stated, referring to the man who was killed in the tragedy while he was nearby the market’s premises.

I’m also here to express my condolences to all of the store owners who lost their livelihoods in this fire disaster. However, before the inquiry is complete, we don’t want to make any judgements.

I’m ordering the police commissioner to begin a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading up to this tragedy immediately.

I’m also giving the commissioner instructions to improve market security in light of the problems we’re hearing about. Protection is necessary for all exposed markets.

“We have the list of all the impacted store owners, and we will review the list to determine whether any compensation is due to assist the victims in getting back on their feet.”
