Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the current minimum wage in the state is N85,000, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers amid economic challenges.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revealed that the state currently pays its workers a minimum wage of N85,000. This amount is N15,000 more than the N70,000 approved by the Federal Government in July.

In July, President Bola Tinubu enacted the new N70,000 minimum wage bill into law after extensive deliberations among government representatives, labor unions, and the private sector.

Sanwo-Olu, appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, stated that the state isn’t offering N85,000 to surpass others but because it has the ability to afford such an amount.

“I am pleased to announce that, following discussions with our union, the minimum wage in Lagos is now set at N85,000,” Sanwo-Olu stated during the program.

“This isn’t a competition, so I’m not going to claim we’re paying more than others. It’s about what we can afford and our capacity. However, we are fully aware that living in Lagos comes with a premium cost of living.”

The governor also announced that the state had raised workers’ salaries earlier in the year, expressing his desire to increase the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025.

“We raised salaries earlier this year for our deserving staff and will continue to do so.”

He expressed his desire to return in January with the announcement that he has raised Lagos’s minimum wage to N100,000. He clarified that this move isn’t intended to criticize anyone but is motivated by a genuine wish for people to earn a living wage and feel assured that their government supports them.
