Ruto includes allies of opposition leader Odinga in his cabinet nominations. Explore the reasons behind this decision and its expected effects.
In an effort to establish a broad-based government, Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Wednesday (Jul. 24) the appointment of four opposition party ministers.
Cabinet Secretaries were announced for various ministries including Hassan Joho for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs; Wycliffe Oparanya as the designated Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives; John Mbadi assigned to the National Treasury ministry while Energy will be headed by Opiyo Wandayi.
Out of the ten nominees, there were four politicians who are staunch allies of the leader from Orange Democratic Movement.
This occurs notwithstanding a caution by the leader of the party, Raila Odinga.
Last week, six former Cabinet ministers were retained by Kenya’s president in his initial round of appointments.
The opposition was accused of treason by protesters on social media, with some claiming the existence of a covert agreement.
Parliament still needs to give the greenlight to the nominees.
As a result of weeks of unrest in East Africa’s economic center, many lives have been lost, and the majority of Cabinet members have been relieved from their positions. There are also demands for Ruto to step down. Citizens started protesting after they disapproved the suggested legislation that aimed at imposing additional taxes while millions struggle with increased living costs in Kenya.
