Russia has launched a large-scale missile assault targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing widespread disruptions amid the ongoing conflict.
According to Ukraine’s energy minister, Russia has initiated a “massive” missile assault targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Herman Halushchenko announced the implementation of emergency power outages following reports of explosions in multiple cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv. On Thursday morning, the Ukrainian air force issued a nationwide air raid alert citing “the threat of missile danger.”
The BBC’s Paul Adams highlights that this marks the second attack on Ukraine’s energy system this month, as temperatures in the region drop. Throughout the conflict, Russia has frequently targeted Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure.
Ukrainian officials have been cautioning for a while that Russia is amassing cruise and ballistic missiles to initiate coordinated, nationwide assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

This marks the second attack of this kind within a month.
As expected, the assault stretched over several hours, with waves of drones and missiles sweeping across this expansive country.
Ukraine’s response is similarly predictable, as the authorities are implementing pre-emptive emergency power cuts to minimize potential overload damage to the national grid.
Temperatures are declining, and the country has already seen its initial snowfalls. However, Ukraine’s notoriously harsh winter is yet to unleash its full force.
If Russia continues its nationwide attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, as it has during past winters, Ukraine will once more endure a difficult few months.
