Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated a two-day state visit to North Korea, where he is scheduled to engage in discussions with the country’s leadership on economic, security, and international matters.

Upon arrival at the Pyongyang airport, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally welcomed Putin, marking the Russian president’s first visit to the nation since 2000.

The visit, which commenced on Tuesday, is anticipated to encompass a packed schedule, as stated by Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, who highlighted the intention to sign multiple agreements during the visit.

Ushakov further mentioned that Putin has already approved the signing of a significant Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with North Korea, underscoring the importance of the visit.

The anticipated face-to-face discussions between Putin and Kim are expected to delve into crucial and sensitive issues, with a primary focus on the international agenda.

Ushakov emphasised the alignment of the two countries’ approaches to global challenges, emphasising the shared vision of a multipolar world based on equality, sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs.

The visit signifies Putin’s return to North Korea after nearly two decades, following Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia’s Far East in September, which strengthened bilateral relations to a strategic level, as noted by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
