According to U.S. intelligence, Russia and Iran are reportedly divided on their approach to meddling in American elections, signaling potential friction between the two nations.

According to an unnamed official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), US adversaries are attempting to influence elections in conflicting ways. Russia and Iran, for instance, have differing objectives regarding outcomes in the presidential race. This claim was made on Monday.

According to a source, China, Russia, Cuba, and Iran have been identified as the entities “targeting House and Senate races across the country” in addition to the upcoming presidential election in November. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) also suggested that smaller nations “may be attempting their own influence operations,” as reported by the Associated Press.

China’s “influence operations” are reportedly aimed at candidates from both major parties, though Beijing maintains a neutral position in the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The U.S. intelligence community believes that Russia favors Trump because of his perceived supportive stance on the Ukraine conflict and admiration for President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Iran is thought to oppose the Republican candidate out of concern about potential escalations if Trump were to return to office.

High-ranking Russian officials have stated that it would be pointless for their country to interfere in the US presidential election, even if they desired to do so. They believe American elites are committed to hostility and won’t allow any leader to deviate from this course.

During Donald Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2021, US policies aligned with the notion that he began supplying American weapons to Ukraine and played a role in escalating tensions leading towards open hostilities. These events culminated in February 2022 under his successor, Joe Biden. In his campaign trail rhetoric, Trump asserted—without providing evidence—that Russia would have been deterred from military action against Kiev if he had remained in office.

The ODNI has previously stated that foreign countries are employing AI-generated content in their alleged efforts to interfere with U.S. electoral processes, but they did not provide any examples or explanations regarding how these activities were attributed to foreign entities.

The strategies that US officials attribute to their adversaries appear similar to actions allegedly taken by Israel, a crucial US ally, during the current election cycle. As reported in an exposé by The New York Times, West Jerusalem has been accused of using fake social media accounts and news websites to inundate both the American public and elected officials with narratives supporting Israel’s interests.

According to the June report, Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs initiated a campaign last October that utilized AI-generated messages to maintain its information flow and specifically targeted Black lawmakers from the Democratic Party.
