Road accidents are not caused by witches-FRSC informs Nigerians

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), road users’ irresponsibility rather than witchcraft is to blame for Nigeria’s traffic accidents.

During the launch of the 2023 Ember Month Safety Campaign, SC Istifanus Ibrahim, Sector Commander, Cross River Sector Command of FRSC, revealed this.

According to NAN, the campaign’s slogan for 2023 was “speed thrills but it kills, drive responsibly and avoid overloading”.

According to Ibrahim, the final four months of the year are marked by an increase in vehicular and socioeconomic activity, and as a result, commercial drivers aim to enhance their earnings during this time.

He claimed that although traffic accidents occurred during the Ember months just like they did in every other month of the year due to an increase in the desire of drivers to drive too fast and disregard traffic laws.

“I’d want to take this opportunity to dispel the myth that more crashes occur around this time of year due to the presence of malevolent spirits.

“This is illogical because environmental, mechanical, and human variables all play a role in causing collisions.

Thus, he stated, “the core of the Ember months campaign is to complement other mechanisms that have been deployed to stamp-out overloading, speed, and other attitudes that can hinder our goal of 5% reduction in traffic fatalities and injuries.”

Gov. Bassey Otu, who launched the campaign, stated that while speed was frequently thrilling, it also carried a high risk when it was not used correctly.

When people go behind the wheel, they hold their own safety, the safety of their passengers, and the safety of those on the road in their hands, according to Otu, who was speaking on behalf of Mr. Elvert Ayambem, Speaker of the Cross River House of Assembly.

He said that as the roads are a shared area and our driving habits have an impact on those around us, it is crucial to drive safely, abide by speed limits, and avoid overloading vehicles in order to prevent accidents.
