Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned Governor Siminalayi Fubara of River State against making “baseless accusations” towards him.
He stated that the police find it unacceptable to threaten violence or arson over a local government election.
The statement follows Fubara’s assertion that Egbetokun will be held responsible if there is a breakdown of law and order in the state.
The governor stepped in regarding an incident at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office on Friday morning.
He stopped a reported attempt by the police to take away materials intended for the upcoming local government elections.

Reports indicate that this development is occurring during an ongoing political crisis in Rivers State regarding the upcoming local government election scheduled for Saturday.
Nonetheless, in a statement released by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Egbetokun expressed surprise at Governor Fubara’s unexpected arrival at the RSIEC office.
A segment of the statement indicated: “The Nigeria Police Force has expressed concern over recent comments by His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, who made several unfounded allegations against the Office of the Inspector-General and the Nigeria Police Force. Given these assertions, it is essential to clarify matters.”
The Nigeria Police strongly objects to the governor’s unjustified outburst and baseless accusations aimed at both the Inspector-General of Police and the entire force. They recommend exercising caution and maintaining decency in pursuing individual political objectives.
