The Rivers State government responds to the State Assembly’s allegations of misconduct against Governor Fubara and his deputy, fueling the political crisis.

The Rivers State Government has claimed that the State House of Assembly is hindering Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s efforts to fully execute a recent Supreme Court judgment.

At a Monday press conference in Port Harcourt, Joseph Johnson, the state’s Commissioner for Information, asserted that even though the court’s ruling was not advantageous to the governor, Fubara remained dedicated to implementing it.

He claimed that the Assembly had intentionally created obstacles to hinder the process.

Johnson mentioned that it is widely recognized that the members of the Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly have consistently obstructed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, from fully executing the Supreme Court’s ruling on the prolonged political and legal conflict following their unsuccessful effort to impeach him on October 30, 2023.

He further highlighted Governor Fubara’s dedication to maintaining peace and prioritizing the interests of the people above personal or sectional concerns.

“Since the unwarranted attack on Governor Fubara commenced, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to peace and remained determined to prioritize the people of Rivers State,” Johnson remarked.

The commissioner also mentioned the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 28, 2025, which addressed significant matters such as the confiscation of the state’s federation revenue allocation, nullification of the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, and re-submission of the 2025 budget to Amaewhule’s assembly.

He stated: “Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling having some unfavorable aspects—especially its unforeseen remarks on the contentious defection issue, which was not officially presented to the court—Governor Fubara has stayed dedicated to fully executing the judgment, regardless of any challenges.”
