Rivers Crisis: Two Members of House of Assembly Elect New Speaker
Lawmakers aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently elected Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a decision made following the governor’s dismissal of the 27 members who switched from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
The opposition party, APC, has urged its members, now the majority in the state parliament, to move forward with plans to impeach Governor Fubara, setting the stage for potential political upheaval in Rivers State.
In response to these events, a group of lawmakers gathered and selected Jumbo, a seasoned representative from Bonny Constituency, as the new Speaker, succeeding Edison Ehie and Martin Amaewhule in this role under the current administration.
Additionally, the assembly appointed Hon. Sokari Goodboy as the Majority Leader, with the new Speaker emphasizing the importance of transparency, public engagement, and collaboration with the Governor’s office to serve the interests of the people of Rivers State effectively.
