Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced that he has agreed to the terms of the peace agreement facilitated by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the long-standing political conflict in the state.

The conflict arose from a confrontation between Fubara and his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

In a statewide address commemorating the 2023 Christmas celebration, the governor emphasized his acceptance of the peace deal. He acknowledged that the intervention by the president has created an opportunity for the resolution of the political strife in the state.

Fubara recognized that the directives have elicited mixed reactions throughout the state. However, he assured the public that he has thoroughly examined the terms of the agreement and believes that it is not as negative as some perceive it to be.

He stated, “Having been a key participant in the entire saga, I have taken the time to carefully analyze the terms of the agreement and have concluded that the Peace Pact is not as detrimental as it is portrayed by those who are genuinely opposed to it.”

“It is certainly not a death sentence. It provides a pathway towards achieving lasting peace and stability in our beloved state.”

Consequently, the governor reaffirmed his acceptance of the Presidential Peace Proclamation and his commitment to implementing both the essence and specifics of the declaration. He emphasized that this would be done in a manner that restores political stability to the state without compromising the collective interests of the people and the cherished democratic values they share.

Fubara highlighted that both parties involved in the crisis have taken significant strides in implementing the proclamation, emphasizing that no price is too high to pay for peace.
