Rivers Crisis: House of Reps Overwhelmingly Backs State of Emergency

Nigeria’s House of Representatives votes in strong support of the state of emergency in Rivers State amid ongoing political turmoil and protests.
The House of Representatives has cast a decisive vote in favor of the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu announced a state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months due to the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
Two days later, Tinubu reached out to the National Assembly to request their endorsement of the emergency rule declaration.
During a plenary session on Thursday, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbass presented the president’s letter.
When the matter was put to a voice vote, the legislators overwhelmingly supported President Tinubu’s declaration, affirming his decision.
Speaker Abbass noted that 240 lawmakers were present at the session, confirming that a quorum was met.
