Rivers crisis: Assembly Speaker position officially acknowledged by Gov Fubara, recognizing Wike’s loyalist

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially acknowledged Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaehwule as the legitimate Speaker of the House of Assembly, putting an end to months of political tension.

The tension arose from a growing divide between Fubara and his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The situation reached its peak when Amaehwule, a strong supporter of Wike, initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor. In response, Fubara refused to recognize Amaehwule as the Speaker and even took legal action against him and 26 other lawmakers who switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, with the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, the impeachment proceedings were ultimately dropped.
