The removal of Edison Ehie as majority leader on Monday added a new twist to the drama engulfing the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Ehie is a devoted follower of Governor Similanayi Fubara, our correspondent learned. There were reports that the governor blocked the first attempt to bring charges against him.
At the Assembly meeting in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Speaker Martins Amaehwule declared the majority leader’s dismissal, claiming his nonattendance from the meeting as the cause.

About 17 House members, according to Amaehwule, were in favour of moving the house.
Meanwhile, the Assembly’s entire complex is under the control of security authorities.
Unknown arsonists set fire to the Assembly chamber. According to what our correspondent has learned, the action was taken to stall the governor’s impeachment process. The governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are said to have had disagreements.
