The 1999 Nigerian Constitution, according to Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, does not allow elected local government chairmen to extend their terms.
This declaration follows the governor’s directive for the elected council chairmen, whose three-year term ended on Monday, to hand over to the heads of administration in the 23 local government districts.
This order was given by Fubara on Tuesday in Port Harcourt during a state broadcast.
Speaking to reporters in Port Harcourt, Fubara stated that the decision intends to maintain peace and order in the state and is in line with the requirements of the constitution.

He declared, “We will boldly lead the road to guarantee that peace reigns in the state while defending all followers of patriotism for their stance on the straight and narrow.
“The tenure laws for municipal governments are clear-cut. The court unequivocally upheld the legal position.
“The law is the law; it does not extend the term of the municipal government. According to the court, yes.
In addition to pledging to defend his followers, the governor said he would oppose any “big plan to arrest” them.
