Acclaimed director Ridley Scott brings “Gladiator” back to theaters, offering fans a renewed cinematic experience of the iconic epic.
Ridley Scott is bringing “Gladiator” back to the big screens 24 years after the original movie.
Succeeding Russell Crowe as the main character, Paul Mescal portrays Lucius Verus, who is cast into the Gladiator arena to battle for his life before roaring crowds.
In addition to director Scott returning to lead the project, Connie Nielsen also reprises her role as Lucilla—a development she hadn’t anticipated.
“No, I really didn’t. I viewed it as a standalone film, like a one-off event. It was such an incredible story,” she said about the first movie.
“After reading the script, I was completely blown away by its incredible story and plot points. It made me think, ‘Wow, this is going to be amazing,'” she added.
Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington joins the ancient Roman setting by portraying Macrinus. Washington expressed admiration for his character’s tenacity.
“I believe he is a genius for rising from the arena floor to the halls of what was known as the Roman hierarchy. I truly admire his achievements. Of course, we only see part of that journey,” he said with a smile.
Wearing the Roman costume significantly aided him in embracing his character.
“That was beneficial. Every aspect of it made a difference. Everything you saw resembled Rome—from the scenery to the people—all contributing to an unmistakably Roman atmosphere on set,” he commented about his appearance.”
“Gladiator II,” featuring Fred Hechinger, Joseph Quinn, and Pedro Pascal, is set to premiere in cinemas worldwide starting Thursday, November 14.
