Revenue Service Bill Threatens Our Survival – Customs Boss

The Nigeria Customs Service has raised concerns that the proposed Revenue Service Bill could negatively impact its operations and push it out of business. Read more on the controversy.
Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has expressed concerns that his agency’s future is at risk due to the proposed Nigeria Revenue Service Bill currently under consideration in the National Assembly.
He expressed his stance at the public hearing held by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on Wednesday.
In his statement, the head of Customs highlighted several jurisdictional conflicts concerning the proposed Nigeria Revenue Service Bill.
He stated, “Section 1 of the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill 2024 offers a legal framework for tax and revenue administration under any law, with Section 42 specifically defining tax. Therefore, this section encompasses all provisions outlined in Sections 3 and 4 of the NCS Act, 2023.”
We should promote cooperation and the integration of operations between Customs and tax authorities, rather than eliminating Customs or repealing an existing law simply to create a new one.
