On Tuesday, the relentless pursuit of finding survivors from a fatal landslide in southern Ethiopia that tragically resulted in 229 fatalities persisted.
As per the local authorities, many individuals who tried to save survivors were among those included in the significantly increased death toll from its initial count of 55.
Heavy rain caused the disaster in Ethiopia’s isolated Kencho Shacha Gozdi region.
According to Dagmawi Ayele, a local administrator, victims of the incident included young children and pregnant women. At least five individuals were rescued alive.
On Facebook, Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed expressed his deep condolences for the tragic loss and announced that he has mobilized the federal disaster prevention task force to aid in searching and rescuing efforts.
It is currently unknown how many individuals are still missing.
During Monday, various fatalities were buried as rescue crews searched the rough landscape for any survivors of an earlier landslide.
The communication office in Gofa Zone, where the mudslides took place, reported that officials were continuously searching the area.
Many rescuers are still missing, according to Markos Melese, the director of Gofa Zone’s disaster response agency.
As rescue efforts continued, certain women wailed as they witnessed rescuers employing shovels to clear the dense mud.
During Ethiopia’s rainy season, which started in July and is predicted to persist until mid-September, landslides are frequently observed.
