Reps summon CBN Governor and Finance Minister on $250 million IT deal for customs
The $250 million IT solution deal between Webb Fontaine and the Nigerian Customs Service will be the subject of an investigation by the House of Representatives.
Following a discussion of a motion of urgent public interest made on Wednesday during plenary by Timehin Adelegbe, the lower chamber adopted the resolution.
In his motion, Adelegbe said that although the IT solution contract was started to enhance Customs operations, recent snags have impacted the procedure for processing goods.
He claimed that things had become so terrible that banks are unable to send money to the federal government any more.
Even banks find it difficult to transfer data on taxes collected on behalf of the federal government under these circumstances, he claimed.
Following the passage of the motion, the House decided that the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, the Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, and the CEO of Webb Fontaine should be invited to testify before the Committee on Customs and Excise about the contract.
Additionally, the MPs requested the Federal Ministry of Finance and CBN to halt any further payments due to Web Fontaine until the probe is finished.
