Reps request transportation minister’s presence to discuss ongoing train derailments
Due to the frequent train derailments, the House of Representatives has called Sai’du Akali, the Minister of Transportation, to account.
The House Committee on Transportation was also instructed by the House to look into the derailments.
Following a motion made by Umar Ajilo on Tuesday during plenary, the minister was called upon.
Mr. Ajilo stated in the motion that it is becoming concerning how frequently the Abuja-Kaduna line experiences derailments.
According to him, the train between Abuja and Kaduna had already derailed in May 2024 and again on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“We need to pay attention as a group to the worrying trend of frequent train derailments on the Abuja-Kaduna line,” Mr Ajilo stated.
Therefore, the House decided that the minister and other relevant parties had to inform Nigerians about the causes of the frequent derailments as well as the steps being taken to ensure that these regrettable situations don’t happen again.
The House also ordered the Committee on Land Transport to launch an inquiry in the next four weeks.
