Miss Chalya Silas, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was murdered in Kaduna state. The House of Representatives has urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure that justice is served promptly for her.

After a resolution by Representative Beni Lar (PDP-Plateau) was unanimously adopted at Tuesday’s plenary, the call was made.

Proposing the motion, Lar reminded the audience that Silas was savagely killed on October 18 in Barnawa, Kaduna South Local Government Area, while running.

Silas, according to her, was from Tabat in the Plateau state’s Langtang North Federal Constituency.

The congressman said that the deceased, a Rehabilitation Sciences graduate from the University of Jos, sadly perished at the hands of her attackers while completing the required service year.

“This sad event is only one of many murders of defenceless women and girls that occur across the country, with the offenders frequently going unpunished or not found.

“Apprehensive that, with these vicious attackers still at large and free to prey on their next victim, the female child’s safety and security is no longer guaranteed.

“It would discourage possible offenders and ensure a safer atmosphere for Nigerian residents and children if justice was served in this matter quickly.

The nation as a whole, as well as the relatives and loved ones of the victims, would be denied justice if the case’s justice were delayed, the speaker threatened.

Without action, Lar warned, the country will become unsafe to live in because to the ongoing attacks, rapes, and murders of young girls and women.

In observance of the departed, the legislators observed a moment of quiet and directed the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police to promptly identify those responsible.

The Committee on Police was directed to look into the situation by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas in his decision.

A evaluation of corps members’ safety throughout their one-year mandatory national service was also directed by him to the Committee on Youth Development.

Lar thanked the house for acting quickly to address her constituent’s situation as she spoke to the press.

In order to guarantee the police authorities’ prompt execution of House resolutions, she also pledged to monitor their progress.
