To bolster food sufficiency nationwide and tackle the escalating cost of sustenance, the House of Representatives has pledged a sum of N648 million to aid Federal Government efforts. The funds will be generated from halving lawmakers’ salaries over six months.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, proposed an amendment to a motion’s prayer calling for lawmakers to contribute 50% of their monthly salaries totaling N600,000 towards aiding Nigerians amidst challenging times. The proposal was subsequently adopted.
The revised prayer of Kalu was in response to a proposal put forth by Ibrahim Isiaka, representing Ogun State. The plea urged advocates for the proposed protests across Nigeria to forego their plans and instead engage with the government through dialogue.
