In order to address security issues in the Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Constituency of Borno State, the House of Representatives has requested that the Federal Government create a special taskforce.
Following the adoption of a motion made during Tuesday’s plenary by Hon. Ahmed Jaha, the House passed the resolution.
According to the House, the taskforce should be given authority to defend the lives and property of local farmers.
The Green Chamber further requested that security agencies step up their monitoring and intelligence gathering efforts in the area in order to locate and apprehend those responsible for attacks on farms.
Jaha, the one who introduced the motion, denounced the ongoing murder of small-scale farmers in the Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Constituency.
The attacks on farmers, he said, not only result in human casualties but also significantly impair food production, creating a shortage of food, rising prices, and unstable economies. He said the House could not afford to ignore this.
Jaha voiced concern that the ongoing unrest in the Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Constituency has bred a climate of fear and uncertainty, deterring farmers from cultivating their grounds and causing them to leave their farm produce unharvested.
The congressman stated: “While we acknowledge the security authorities’ efforts in our area to battle terrorism and insurgency, we must admit that more work has to be done to ensure our farmers have a secure environment.
“It is about time we take urgent steps to defend their lives and ensure their economic well-being,” the statement reads. “The current security measures have proven ineffective in deterring attacks on innocent farmers.
