The House of Representatives is actively working to deprive the Senate of its constitutional authority to confirm nominees.
Ben Kalu, the deputy speaker, revealed that the House had received certain memoranda proposing constitutional amendments that would deprive the Senate of its exclusive authority to confirm nominations.
After a legislator from the APC, Ogun, named Isiaka Ibrahim voiced concerns about the Senate’s exclusive power to confirm appointees, Mr. Kalu made this statement during the discussion of a conference report on the South-East Development Commission Bill.

In response to the article, Mr. Isiaka stated, “With all due respect, this has now become a recurring decimal. Every time we have a conference committee and it involves the approval for nomination, the senate would always tell us to remove the National Assembly and put the Senate.”
“It is based on our constitution, and in the course of the ongoing constitution amendment, some have submitted memoranda to amend it that where the senate appears, it should be changed to the National Assembly,” Mr. Kalu said in response to the question posed. The constitution review is still in progress.
It is anticipated that this action will lead to a major confrontation between the Senate and the House.
The Senate, however, might be in control since they could just reject the bill when it is put up.
