Staff members at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State are required to work three days each week.
A special release with the number 4642, dated August 14, 2023, and signed by G.O. Saliu, Registrar and Secretary to Council, was used by the institution to make this revelation.
It stated that the choice had been made in light of the recent elimination of petrol (also known as PMS) subsidies.
It bemoaned the fact that commuters who make a living from their jobs must deal with an aggravation of their condition due to the accompanying increase in transportation costs and living expenses.
He continued by saying that the institution’s administration had advised a temporary change to the work schedule for staff members after carefully evaluating the circumstance.
He insisted that the institution’s senate deliberated and adopted the decision in its meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2023, which went into effect on August 14.
People doing critical duties are immune from this change, the statement noted.
It requested deans, directors, heads of departments, and heads of units to work towards a seamless implementation of the intervention, urging staff members to maintain commitment, open communication, and cooperation to ensure free workflow, including working from home when and where necessary.
“The majority of Nigerians are facing enormous economic difficulties as a result of the astronomical increase in the price of fuel at the pump brought on by the Federal Government’s removal of the subsidy. Due to the accompanying increase in transportation costs and living expenses, the condition of wage earners who go to work each day is expected to worsen.
“After giving the situation careful thought, University Management recommended a temporary change to the work schedule for staff members, which Senate at its meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2023, considered and approved. With effect from Monday, August 14, 2073, staff members are now required to work on site for three (3) days in a row. However, it should be noted that this adjustment does not apply to those performing essential duties.
It should also be noted that as things get better, management will review the arrangement. Staff members must continue to be dedicated, honest with one another, and work together to provide a free flow of work, even when and where appropriate, working from home. In light of the aforementioned, Management requests all deans, directors, department heads, and unit heads’ understanding to ensure a smooth implementation of the intervention, according to the statement.
