The crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike was not just a party issue, according to the Peoples Democratic Party’s Governors Forum (PDP-GF), which stated on Thursday that President Bola Tinubu and Nigerian governors intervened in the matter.

It claimed that the crisis may have had an impact on the security dynamics in the South-South geopolitical zone, as well as the region’s oil output and overall economy, if prompt intervention had not been taken.

Cyril Maduabum, the Director General of the PDP governors, clarified in a statement made in Abuja that it was dishonest for certain people to make fun of the courtesy shown to the president for his involvement.

It is important to acknowledge that the events in Rivers State have ramifications for national security and have the potential to destabilise the state. In fact, the Rivers State Police Command made note of this in their statement.

As the country’s commander in chief of the armed forces and, thus, its main security official, Mr. President had to step in to head off the crisis. Indeed, Nigeria’s past is filled with examples of how events in one state have the potential to spiral out of control and impact the entire nation.

One of the main oil-producing states in Nigeria is Rivers State. A breach of peace in Rivers State could undoubtedly have an impact on other federation states given its strategic significance and worth, according to Maduabum.

He continued by saying that the fact that Governor Bala Mohammed called an urgent meeting of the forum as soon as the issue pertaining to the state of Rivers came up was evidence of his strong leadership and sense of duty.

Those criticising the PDP governors’ forum chairman and other members appear to have forgotten that the nation’s unity, peace, and tranquilly are more important than party affiliations.According to the statement, “the PDP Governors’ Forum chairman has not done anything wrong in any way by thanking the president for his efforts to resolve the crisis in Rivers State.”

According to the statement, Mohammed had no intention of transferring control of the PDP—a powerful opposition party—to the president, who was chosen based on the platform of a different political party.
