Real Madrid destroys Liverpool to gain the upper hand in the Champions League match.

Even though Liverpool had a two-goal lead early on in the first leg of their Champions League round of-16 match at Anfield, Real Madrid shocked everyone by defeating them 5-2.

Vinicius Junior struck twice before halftime to offset Liverpool’s early lead, and three unanswered goals in the second half, including two goals from Karim Benzema, handed Jurgen Klopp’s team its worst Champions League home defeat ever.

Throughout a furious first half, the Reds had threatened to overrun the world champions, who had defeated them in the Champions League final in May. Just four minutes, Darwin Nunez’s flick gave them the lead before Mohamed Salah capitalised on a mistake by Thibaut Courtois.

When Real Madrid shook, they instead displayed that defining skill and composure. Vinicius fired the ball low into the far corner of Alisson’s goal to restore parity, and the goalkeeper then made the same error as Courtois by allowing the Brazilian to score his second goal of the game.

Early in the second half, Luka Modric’s free-kick gave Eder Militao’s team the lead, but Karim Benzema’s shot off Joe Gomez and beyond Alisson silenced Anfield. After Benzema’s stunning second addition, Liverpool was defeated.

Klopp and his team will require a miracle at the Bernabeu next month as a result of the outcome. The more pressing issue is that Liverpool’s season-long frailty has once again been revealed following a few self-assurance-boosting Premier League triumphs.
