The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has explained its reasons for launching an investigation into accusations of misconduct involving two youth pastors, following allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Pastor Sunday Akande, the National Overseer of the church, informed PUNCH that this situation is unprecedented for their congregation and is being addressed with utmost seriousness. He stated that a panel has been formed to investigate the allegations thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken based on its findings.
Akande explained that the suspension aims to encourage individuals who have reportedly experienced molestation or harassment to step forward and provide testimony against the pastors. As far as I know, no one has yet come forward claiming to be a victim of harassment.
This is the first instance of such an allegation being made against the church. Should any similar issues arise, we are committed to investigating them thoroughly and finding ways to address them. The church does not tolerate this type of behavior in any form.
The controversy started last week when the news blog Gistlovers alleged that two RCCG youth pastors were improperly guiding teenage boys into homosexuality, claiming they misused their mentorship roles to influence young men. According to the blog, a 20-year-old individual, who requested anonymity, accused the pastors of “influencing many into being gay.”
The blog post also alleged that a pastor, together with a close friend who was involved as a youth church coordinator, engaged in misconduct by organizing fake Bible study sessions to lure young boys into inappropriate activities.

One of the pastors accused has refuted these claims, releasing a statement to clarify his stance. He stated, “I have never sought sexual favors from any male as compensation or reward in exchange for providing help, opportunities, or roles. God alone is the sovereign who grants and removes authority and provides positions and platforms.”
He also spoke about the purported screenshots of conversations with a reported victim, clarifying that he was involved in a WhatsApp group chat focused on male reproductive health and self-esteem for teenage boys. He mentioned that the group discussed subjects such as hygiene, appropriate underwear choices, and confidence related to body image.
The church formally suspended the two pastors concerned, as stated in a letter dated October 28. This action reaffirms its dedication to maintaining biblical teachings.
At the same time, a pastor’s family has filed a petition with the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Alagbon. They are requesting an investigation into Gistlover for alleged defamation. According to their legal representative, Adekunle Adeyinka, the accusations lack merit and have resulted in emotional distress and security issues for the pastor due to actions by anonymous individuals.
