After dropping two straight games in Group A, the hosts of the World Cup were eliminated.
After the Netherlands drew 1-1 with Ecuador, Qatar became the first nation eliminated from the competition as a result of this incident.
In their second group match, Senegal crushed Qatar 3-1, ending Qatar’s hopes of earning three points.
The host nation still has Tuesday’s encounter at the Al Bayt Stadium against the group’s top-ranked team, the Netherlands.
According to the BBC, Qatar made history by hosting the World Cup for the first time in the Middle East. However, after South Africa in 2010, Qatar now holds the unfortunate distinction of being just the second home team to lose the tournament in the group stage.
