Qatar has expressed its strong disapproval of the comments attributed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he referred to Qatar’s role as a mediator in the Gaza war as “problematic.”

Israeli TV aired a recording of Netanyahu allegedly stating that he does not thank Qatar, as they have leverage over Hamas due to their financial support.

Qatar has deemed these remarks “irresponsible” but not surprising. Despite not having official diplomatic relations, Qatar has maintained high-level contacts with Israel since the 1990s.

The Gulf emirate has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and hosts political leaders of Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organization by several countries. Qatar has also provided significant aid to Gaza, which has been under a blockade since 2006.

Israel has allowed Qatar to financially support civil servants, assist impoverished families, and provide fuel for the power plant in Gaza.

This policy has faced criticism within Israel, with opponents arguing that it strengthens Hamas and funds its military activities. Netanyahu, however, defends the approach as a means to prevent attacks on Israel and alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The emirate has been making efforts for weeks to facilitate a new ceasefire, as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen and the Israeli government faces increasing pressure to secure the release of the remaining hostages.

Israel’s Channel 12 TV recently released a recording in which Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his lack of gratitude towards Qatar, comparing it to the UN and Red Cross and stating that he has no illusions about them.

However, he also mentioned his willingness to work with any actor that can help bring the hostages home. Israel has criticized the UN and Red Cross for their perceived lack of support in this matter.

Netanyahu allegedly stated that Qatar could be helpful due to its leverage over Hamas, which stems from its financial support.

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman responded to these remarks, calling them irresponsible and destructive to the ongoing efforts to save innocent lives.

He also accused Netanyahu of undermining the mediation efforts for his own political gain. In response, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized Qatar, stating that it supports and finances terrorism and is responsible for the harm caused by Hamas. He made it clear that Qatar will not have any involvement in Gaza after the war.
