Protests Won’t Affect Academic Calendars, Says NANS

According to NANS, Nigerian students are unwilling to trade off education institution academic calendars for scheduled demonstrations.

At a town hall meeting arranged for youths, students and members of the civil society organisation to communicate before the August 1 intended protest, Lucky Emonefe- the national president of such association spoke these words on Wednesday in Abuja.

NANS collaborated with Mr. Osahon Okunbo, the chairman of Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments to convene a town hall meeting.

Emonefe encouraged the students and young members of society to adhere to laws and refuse any invitation for demonstrations.

Our primary focus is to maintain our current academic calendar without any hindrance as continuing with our studies holds paramount importance for us.

Protesting by means of coming out is not advisable as it runs the risk of being taken over, leading to disturbance in public peace and causing destruction to property.

Despite disagreeing with the call for demonstrations, our current hunger and difficult economic circumstances make it challenging to endure harsh policies.

He stated that through dialogue, they hold the belief of being able to positively engage with government. He is urging government officials to closely examine current policies and take necessary actions towards resolving any issues present.

The convener of the town hall meeting was praised by the NANS president for taking such an initiative, highlighting its significance as a platform for young people to voice their concerns.

Sunday Ashefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Matters, urged youths and students in Nigeria not participate in the scheduled protest on August 1.

According to him, the meeting’s attendance of both students and young individuals demonstrated their keenness towards federal government initiatives in alleviating the nation’s distress.
