Protesters Face Legal Action Today Amid #EndBadGovernance Campaign

Government takes legal steps against protesters in ongoing #EndBadGovernance movement today. Stay updated on the developments.

Today, the leaders and organizers of the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations that occurred between August 1st to 10th in 2024 are scheduled for arraignment by the Federal Government.

The alleged crimes being brought against the protesters include treason, inciting mutiny, and intending to destabilize Nigeria.

Michael Adaramoye, who is also known as Lenin alongside Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaoluwa Simon and Angel Innocent are set to be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court.

Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khamis and AbdulSalam Zubairu are also included.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, has filed six charges against Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich), a British citizen who is now listed as a defendant by the Federal Government.

The defendants listed in the FHC/ABJ/CR/454/2024 charge sheet were alleged to have committed several offenses, including but not limited to treason, causing instability within the nation, intimidating the President and destroying NCC located in Kano.

Between July 1 and August 4, 2024, the IG levied accusations against protesters of engaging in a coordinated effort to conspire towards committing felonious acts – specifically treason – with the ulterior motive of destabilizing the nation.

According to Egbetokun, the act was in violation of Section 95 and can be penalized under Section 97 of the Penal Code.

According to the IG, during the period from July 1, 2024, to August 4, 2024 at Karshi Abuja FCT and under this court’s jurisdiction, the defendants collaborated with a motive of destabilizing Nigeria. They conspired together to commit an offense punishable by law – attempting mutiny incitement – which is in violation of Section96 and can lead to penalties outlined in Section97 of Penal Code.

According to the IG, from July 1st through August 10th of 2024 in Abuja FCT, Kaduna, Kano and Gombe states in Nigeria, a group of protesters collaborated with Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich), a British citizen. The aim was to destabilize Nigeria by conducting attacks on police officers and burning down various structures such as police stations, the High Court Complexes at NCC Complex and Government House Karo; also affected were properties belonging to Kadama Investment & Promotions Agency office along with NURTW’s headquarters among several other buildings- all aimed towards intimidating or undermining President.

According to Egbetokun, the violation is against Section 410 of CAP P3 LEN 204 of the Penal Code (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act.

The defendants were charged with conspiring alongside British citizen, Wynne, to cause destabilization in Nigeria. They incited public dissatisfaction towards the government by creating a commotion while displaying placards bearing slogans such as “end bad governance” and various other messages aimed at causing discontent towards the authorities.

According to the IG, they have engaged in an illegal act that violates Section 416 of the Penal Code (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act CAP P3 LFN 204.
