Protesters breached the security fence outside the Democratic National Convention venue, prompting heightened security measures and police response.

A portion of the metal security fence barricading the venue for US President Joe Biden’s scheduled speech on Monday night at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago has been torn down by demonstrators advocating for Palestine.

Illinois is currently hosting a four-day event where prominent Democrats have convened to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

In Chicago, protestors congregated at the Union Center and demanded President Biden to slash military support for Israel whilst urging the Israeli government to terminate their offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The group managed to penetrate through the fence on Union Center’s northern front as they vociferously expressed defiance towards law enforcement interventionists standing along their way.

A video captured at the location exhibits activists toppling a segment of the fence and confronting officers who were attempting to impede their progress. As a result, multiple individuals have been apprehended.

Since October 2023, protests have been taking place in the US by activists who support Palestine. These individuals engaged in frequent heckling of American politicians and attempted to interrupt public events as an expression of their frustration over the war situation in Gaza.

After facing pressure from fellow Democrats and party donors due to concerns about his declining health affecting his chances of defeating Republican candidate Donald Trump in November, Biden decided to end his presidential campaign last month. He subsequently announced Harris as the person he has chosen for succession.
