Protests over local government elections at the PDP secretariat in Rivers State have led to a significant security response. Learn more about the causes and impacts of the demonstration.

Protests broke out in front of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt on Thursday ahead of the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.

A large number of protesters gathered at the scene, necessitating heavy security. Vehicles moved slowly around the area as security personnel tried to control the crowds due to the demonstration.

According to INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Johnson Alaribo, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is yet to receive the 2023 electoral roll required for the elections.

Alaribo explained that the RSIEC had requested the register but did not release it due to administrative reasons and an Abuja court ruling prohibiting the commission from releasing the register.

The situation has raised concerns over preparations for the upcoming elections as tensions continue to rise in the run-up to the polls.
