Pastor Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, has counselled PDP candidates for local government chairperson elections to make sure that zoning favours them before running for office.
The governor claimed to be a victim of zoning during a media parley held over the weekend at the Government House in Uyo.
He stated that he would not defy the status quo if zoning did not benefit anyone, regardless of how close or helpful the individual appears to be to the general populace.
He also emphasised that he would see to it that the legislation is followed to the letter and reminded the local government chairmen of the House of Assembly regulation requiring them to live in their council regions.
“Since I am a zoning product, I will not fight against zoning. Do not expect me to go against the grain or to exert pressure on anyone if zoning is not in your benefit.
“You know there is a measure in the House of Assembly, it is now a law, and I will apply that law if you want to be a local government chairman. Having to
reside in your council areas to supervise grassroots development and involve the kids in worthwhile endeavours,” he remarked.
He also revealed intentions to create a leisure and amusement park for kids to enjoy during the holidays, stating that the venture will be self-sustaining.
How many people have the means to send their kids on vacation? However, with our Leisure, a person may travel there and spend quality time with their children for a token, negating the need to go abroad, the governor remarked.
When asked about rumours that some lawmakers were lacking in funding, he responded that he was working to prevent recurrent expenses from matching capital expenditures, adding, “Whatever we save is to be put back in the rural areas. With every N500 million I save, I may buy a hospital or a school.
Additionally, he stated that he preferred a strong first term than two fruitless ones.
“You won’t be invited to return until you have successfully completed four years of accounting. I would rather invest in rural areas. The satisfaction of the 7.9 million individuals is my responsibility. I found that nearly everyone is waiting on the government,” stated Eno.
