Major changes to the 1999 Constitution have been proposed by a group of 35 MPs known as the Reformers. Among these changes is the addition of a single six-year term for the governors and the president.

Additionally, the legislators want to change the Constitution to add two vice presidents, one from each of Nigeria’s northern and southern regions.

The group has put out a significant idea that involves rotating the presidency among the six geopolitical zones and holding all elections on the same day.

The lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, briefed the media on Monday at the National Assembly. They stated that they had presented fifty proposed amendments and that six of the measures had been scheduled for the House floor.

“Amending the Constitution to stipulate that the President and the First Vice President must reside in the same region of the nation (either the north or the south), and that the First Vice President (V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” stated Ugochinyere.

According to Ugochinyere, the country’s Constitution revealed a significant gap that has to be fixed.
