The new minimum wage proposal of N48,000 by the Federal Government has been strongly criticized by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), who argue that it lacks any logical basis.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s approach to negotiations, stating that the current proposal is “abysmal” considering that some federal workers already earn up to N77,000.
Osifo questioned the rationale behind presenting a lower figure of N48,000 when the least federal government worker earns N77,000.
He challenged the government to provide data supporting their proposal and demonstrate how it can adequately meet the needs of the average Nigerian worker.
The TUC leader also highlighted that the lack of data backing the N48,000 offer displayed a lack of preparedness on the part of the government, leading to the labor unions walking out of the negotiations.
The conclusion of May marks the deadline for all discussions regarding a new national minimum wage, as stated by him, and the union members continue to emphasize this stance.
