Prince Johnson, once a notorious Liberian warlord and later a senator, has died at the age of 72, marking the end of a tumultuous and divisive political career.
Prince Johnson, the former Liberian warlord who became a senator, has passed away at 72.
Johnson, hailing from the northern region of Nimba, was captured on video drinking a beer in 1990 while his loyal fighters killed then-president Samuel Doe.
Doe’s death sparked two civil wars that resulted in the loss of approximately 250,000 lives.
During the conflict, Johnson served as a leading figure in the militia.
He was subsequently compelled to live in exile in Nigeria, eventually making his return to his homeland in 2004.
Johnson never expressed regret for his actions, maintaining that he had safeguarded civilians whom he described as being ‘led to the slaughterhouse like chickens and goats by the Doe regime’.
Johnson participated in the 2017 presidential election and secured over 8% of the votes in the first round.
He went on to become a senator, serving in that role until he passed away.
