APC leader Femi Fani-Kayode on Wednesday refuted accusations that Bola Tinubu, the party’s presidential candidate, had been charged with and found guilty of trafficking drugs in the US.
Those who claim that Tinubu was convicted of drug trafficking in the US 30 years ago are uninformed, according to Fani-Kayode.
On Tuesday, a court order from years ago allegedly indicted Tinubu for narcotics trafficking and money laundering by the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois.
In response, Fani-Kayode claimed that if the US Ambassador to Nigeria had been wanted in the US, he would not have visited Tinubu.
The former Aviation Minister claimed in a series of tweets that Tinubu wouldn’t have avoided extradition if he had been found guilty of narcotics trafficking in the US.
The former minister of aviation was adamant that Tinubu would succeed him as president of Nigeria.
“BAT was neither charged with drug trafficking nor found guilty of any other crimes in the USA,” he added. This is a FACT, and it’s the VERDICT. Because of an out-of-court settlement and the repatriation of cash in the United States 30 years ago, some people have incorrectly and ignorantly referred to him as a drug tycoon.
“I would advise them to go and learn more about the American legal system because they have no understanding how it operates.
“I don’t think the U.S. Ambassador would have paid a visit to Asiwaju’s campaign headquarters a few weeks ago to wish him luck if he were a drug lord and if he were sought in America.
“Given the strength, animosity, rage, and venom of his innumerable opponents and many detractors, I doubt that he would have eluded extradition all these years if he were a drug lord who is wanted in America.
“If he were a drug lord, he wouldn’t be the front-runner and the opponent to beat in the upcoming presidential race. The opposition is in a frantic state and is making every effort to damage him before February of the next year.
“They started with the Muslim/Muslim ticket issue, but it fizzled out and failed. Now they’ve turned to this and brought up an issue that the American Embassy in Nigeria itself addressed, resolved, and explained in 2003.
“Despite their desperation, the campaign of slander and dirty tricks they are using to discredit a very kind man who has done so much for our county will fail.
The Jagaban is firmly on course, and he SHALL be elected President of our beautiful country in 2019 by God’s help and the consent of the Nigerian people.
