President Bola Tinubu ordered the fast termination of the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara at a meeting he called to discuss the current situation in Rivers State.
Along with acknowledging the leadership of Hon. Martin Amaewhule and the 27 parliamentarians who defected, it also requires the withdrawal of any court suits started by the governor.
In a paper that emerged from the conference, it was said that “all matters instituted in the courts concerning the political crisis in Rivers State by the Governor, Sir Fubara, and his team, shall be withdrawn immediately.”
“The Rivers State House of Assembly’s impeachment procedures against the governor of Rivers State ought to be promptly abandoned. Along with the 27 PDP members that resigned, the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly, headed by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, will be honoured.
The meeting also decided to restore the resignations of commissioners from Governor Fubara’s cabinet.
The text emphasised that “the House of Assembly should reapprove the names of all commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned their appointments due to the political crisis in the state.”
The paper was signed by Governor Fubara, his deputy, Amaewhule, and the state chairsmen of the APC and PDP.
Held at the presidential villa in Abuja, the meeting—which was initially reported to be private—was centred on finding a solution to the situation that resulted in the departure of 27 lawmakers and the subsequent announcement of their seats as vacant.
Former Rivers State governor Dr. Peter Odili, a prominent political figure, and Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, were present at the meeting.
Deputy Governor of the state Ngozi Odu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Vice President Kashim Shettima were also present.
It should be noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) called for new elections after Edison Ehie, the State House of Assembly’s legally recognised Speaker, declared the seats of the MPs who had defected empty.
