Pope Francis appoints a new representative to Nigeria. Learn about the new envoy and what this means for the relationship between the Vatican and Nigeria.
The appointment of the Most Reverend Michael F. Crotty by Pope Francis designates him as Nigeria’s new Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador).
A papal nuncio, also known as an apostolic nuncio, holds a prestigious position in the religious hierarchy and acts as a representative of the Holy See to either another country or international organization.
On Tuesday, July 16, the Apostolic Nunciature to Nigeria released a statement announcing that was approved by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji. As President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and Archbishop of Owerri, he endorsed the communiqué.
Archbishop Ugorji conveyed his appreciation to Pope Francis for the selection of Archbishop Crotty and commended former Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi for his valuable contributions.
